The kayaks
are free.

Every cottage stay at Plum Point in Calvert County, Maryland comes with free kayaks and paddleboards. No rental counter, no hourly rate, no roof rack: they live on the lawn, and the Chesapeake starts where the grass ends.

The commute: lawn, sand, water. Total distance, about forty feet.

The morning paddle

The bay is calmest before lunch.

Mornings on this stretch of the western shore are usually glass. Carry a kayak down from the lawn, launch off the sand, and follow the shoreline in either direction: rays and herons work the shallows, and the cliffs begin to rise to the south.

There is no schedule because there is no rental window. Paddle before coffee, paddle at golden hour, or do both and call it a full day. The Adirondack chairs handle the recovery phase.

Beyond the front yard

Creeks, cliffs, and quiet water.

When you want new water, Kings Landing Park in Huntingtown puts a launch on the Patuxent River about twelve minutes away, where the paddling turns to creeks, marsh edges, and herons in the cypress shade.

Prefer someone else at the helm? The marinas at Chesapeake Beach and Solomons run charter fishing and sailing trips, and our things-to-do guide covers the rest of the waterline.
