Every one of our six waterfront cottages at Plum Point in Calvert County, Maryland is pet-friendly. Not one designated unit, not a waiting list: the whole colony. The Chesapeake starts just past the grass, the porches are screened, and the shoreline walks go on for miles.

Why it works

A beach at the bottom of the yard.

Pet travel usually means compromises: the third-floor unit, the busy road, the "small dogs considered." Plum Point is the opposite. The cottages sit on grass above the property's own private beach, so the first walk of the day starts at your door and follows the water as far as either of you wants to go.

The screened porches earn their keep here: sandy paws decompress outside while dinner happens inside, and evening porch hours come with bay sound instead of traffic. Fire pit nights count as dog time too.

Out and about

Dog-day itinerary, solved.

Mornings belong to the shoreline. For the afternoon, Running Hare Vineyard in Prince Frederick pours wine on a lawn that explicitly welcomes both kids and dogs, about fifteen minutes inland. Back home, golden hour on the sand needs no planning at all.

Boardwalk evenings work too: North Beach's half mile of waterfront welcomes leashed dogs for the sunset stroll. The whole area runs at a dog's preferred pace, which is one of the reasons we like it.
