North Beach,
Maryland.

North Beach is a small bayside town on Maryland's western Chesapeake shore, about 13 minutes north of our cottages at Plum Point. It packs a boardwalk, a fishing pier, a public beach, antique shops, and most of the area's ice cream into a few walkable blocks.

The boardwalk

Half a mile of easy evening.

North Beach's boardwalk runs along the sand for about half a mile, with the fishing pier at its heart and benches facing the water the whole way. Sunrise over the Chesapeake here is the area's best free show, and golden hour brings out strollers, bikes, and dogs on leashes.

Off the boardwalk, the town grid holds antique row, small galleries, coffee, and a Saturday-morning farmers market in season. On summer First Fridays, the bayfront turns into a street festival of classic cars, food trucks, and music.

Beach day

Pier, sand, and wetlands.

The public beach sits right against the boardwalk, with the pier open for fishing and crabbing. At the north end, a wetlands overlook trades crowds for herons, egrets, and terrapins if you time it quietly.

Day passes are seasonal and the beach fills on summer weekends. Our move: beach day on the sand at Plum Point, then drive up for the boardwalk evening.
